Type almost any service into Google right now — "plumber," "roofer," "handyman" — and add "near me." Three businesses show up in the map pack before anyone scrolls. Everyone else, regardless of how good the work is, is competing for whatever's left.
That's not an exaggeration. It's the actual, measured shape of local search behavior.
What that actually means in dollars
Here's the math nobody shows you, using real ticket sizes across a few common local service categories:
| Business type | Avg. ticket | Missed jobs/mo off page 1 | Est. monthly revenue lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plumber | $450 | 20-40 | $9,000-$18,000 |
| HVAC | $600 | 15-35 | $9,000-$21,000 |
| Roofer | $9,000 | 4-10 | $36,000-$90,000 |
| Water damage | $3,500 | 5-12 | $17,000-$42,000 |
These aren't invented numbers — they're the same math we use when we show a business owner their own gap. The pattern holds across almost every local service category: the businesses in positions 4 and below aren't losing customers because the work is worse. They're losing customers because the customer never saw them in the first place.
Why "we're on Google" isn't the same as ranking
Every business with a website is technically "on Google." That's not what determines whether the phone rings. Three things actually move the needle on map-pack position:
- Review count and velocity — not just your star rating, but how many reviews you have relative to the businesses above you, and how recently they've come in
- Google Business Profile completeness — categories, photos, posts, and whether the profile is actively maintained or was set up once and abandoned
- On-site relevance — whether your website actually has a page built for the specific service and city someone is searching, not just a generic homepage
Miss any of the three and you can have a beautiful website that nobody in the map pack ever sees.
The honest timeline
Real movement in the map pack typically takes 60-90 days. Meaningful call volume by month 4-6. Anyone promising results faster than that is either exaggerating or selling something that isn't actually local SEO. The businesses winning right now started their climb months before their competitors even noticed the gap.
The good news: that also means the gap is closeable. It just has to start now, not "eventually."
